Certifications
Shade structures must meet several nationally recognized standards to ensure safety, durability, and fire resistance, especially in commercial, school, and public park applications. Below are three of the most critical certifications to look for when evaluating your shade fabric and components:
ASTM E84: Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials
ASTM E84, also known as the "Tunnel Test", measures the flame spread and smoke development of materials when exposed to fire. Shade fabrics that pass this test are classified based on their flame spread index:
- Class A (I): Flame Spread Index 0–25 (Most resistant)
- Class B (II): 26–75
- Class C (III): 76–200
💡 A Class A rating is often required for commercial, school, or public settings where fire safety is a priority.

NFPA 701 – Test Method 1 & 2
This standard, developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), tests the flammability of textiles and films used in canopies and shade systems:
- Test Method 1: For lightweight fabrics (< 21 oz/yd²)
- Test Method 2: For heavier fabrics (≥ 21 oz/yd²)
NFPA 701 compliance ensures that the fabric will self-extinguish and not drip flaming particles when exposed to fire. It’s a widely required standard for temporary and permanent shade installations in public spaces.

UL 2218 Class IV: Impact Resistance of Roofing Materials
UL 2218 rates materials for their resistance to hail and impact damage. Class IV is the highest level of certification and is especially relevant for:
- Areas with frequent storms or hail
- Schools and parks requiring long-term durability
- Insurance premium reductions (in select regions)
A Class IV rating means the material withstood a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking or tearing.
