Recessed plate mounting is a hybrid installation method for shade structures that combines the clean look of inground posts with the speed and surface compatibility of surface mounting. It's often selected for aesthetic or architectural reasons, offering a more concealed and flush appearance.
What Is Recessed Plate Mounting?
In this method, steel base plates are welded or bolted to the bottom of shade posts and inserted into shallow concrete piers or recessed footings. The post base sits just below or flush with the surface grade, and is then secured with anchor bolts and backfilled or capped. This minimizes visual hardware exposure while preserving structural integrity.

- No Large Footers: Reduces the need for deep, wide footings typical of traditional inground mounts.

Installation Process
1. Core Drilling
Holes are cored or excavated into the surface where posts will be placed, typically around 12–24 inches deep, depending on load requirements.
2. Post & Plate Insertion
Posts with welded plates are inserted into the holes, sitting slightly below grade.
3. Anchoring & Grouting
The recessed base is secured with anchor bolts and structural grout or filled with concrete around the post for added stability.
4. Surface Finish
A cover plate or surrounding fill is used to finish the area flush with the rest of the site.
Considerations
- Drainage: Drain holes or gravel bases may be needed to prevent water accumulation inside the recessed area.
- Pad Strength: Concrete surrounding the recess must meet compressive strength standards.
- Access: Maintenance may require removing surface elements to inspect base hardware.
