Water Run Off

Effective water run-off management in shade structure design helps protect both the structural components and the surrounding playground surfaces from water damage, erosion, or pooling.

Importance of Proper Run-Off

• Fabric Design: Shade canopies are often angled or tensioned to direct rainwater to specific drainage points.
• Prevents Water Pooling: Pooling on fabric can lead to sagging, mold growth, and premature fabric wear.
• Protects Foundation: Excess water runoff can erode soil around posts or create muddy zones in high-use areas.

Design Considerations

• Hip and Cantilever Designs naturally direct water off the sides.
• Steep Pitch Angles (minimum 5–10 degrees) allow faster drainage.
• Drainage Grommets or perforated seams may be added in high rainfall zones.

Integration with Site Drainage

• Run-off should align with the site’s drainage plan and be diverted away from surfacing, walkways, or play zones.
• May require underground drainage pipes or gravel soak beds at runoff points.
