In the book, The Anxious Generation, author Jonathan Haidt explores the growing phenomena of anxieties in children and adolescents and their relation to the transition from a play-based childhood to a phone-based childhood. He talks about the need for children to engage in some “risky play” is necessary for children to overcome fears and develop competencies, including risk assessment and recovery from setbacks. “The merry-go-round was the best playground equipment ever invented because it was thrilling and educational, teaching kids about forces and risk-taking. It was safe enough to learn from mistakes without severe harm.” We felt that adding a merry-go-round and seesaws to our playground would help students participate in more of these cooperative play activities. After researching many companies that provided playground equipment, we were very impressed with WillyGoat. They were easy to communicate with, and were extremely helped us throughout the process of finding all we needed to order and having our equipment installed. Our students are very much enjoying these new play spaces which have provided the opportunities we wanted for cooperative play.
